Timeline of Events
February 2, 4, & 8, 2016: Anne Arundel County Public Schools community forums on Superintendent George Arlotto's proposed start and dismissal time model. A formal survey regarding the Superintdent's proposed model will go live on the evening of February 8 and will be available until February 14.
January 12, 2016: Superintendent George Arlotto announced that Anne Arundel County Public Schools will hold four community forums in late January and early February to provide information and solicit feedback regarding a proposal to shift school start and dismissal times--pending full funding and broad community support--beginning in the 2017-2018 school year. December 16, 2015: Superintendent George Arlotto included $8.1 million in his recommended Fiscal Year 2017 budget to accomplish an across-the-county shift in school start and dismissal times beginning in August 2017. In this plan, high schools are proposed to have a daily start time of 8:30 a.m. and a dismissal time of 3:18 p.m., middle schools would begin no earlier than 9:30 a.m. and end no later than 4:15 p.m., and elementary schools would begin between 7:50 and 9:15 a.m. and end between 2:15 and 3:40 p.m. (Click here for a list of tentative start and dismissal times by school).
June 17, 2015: the Board of Education of Anne Arundel County (BOE) voted to allocate $600,000 “to shift current school hours no later than the start of the 2016-2017 school year.” Click here to watch the video of the June 17, 2015, BOE meeting. February 18, 2015: the Board of Education of Anne Arundel County Board of Education (BOE) – in the adoption of its FY2016 budget request – included $600,000 for the purpose of changing school start times. February 2, 2015: the Anne Arundel County Council passed a resolution encouraging the Anne Arundel County Board of Education and the Superintendent of Anne Arundel County Public Schools to establish safe and healthy school hours for all students. December 10, 2014: Superintendent George Arlotto included $750,000 in his recommended Fiscal Year 2016 budget to purchase transportation software and hire a transportation specialist to examine what efficiencies could be gained in student transportation across the school system.
