Become a Business Mentor

Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math Magnet Program (STEM) and BioMedical and Allied Health Magnet Program (BMAH)

The STEM internship opportunity prepares our STEM students for their many futures through site-based experiences in STEM-related industry, government, and community professional settings. Through partnerships with businesses, local colleges and universities, and STEM professionals, students in the STEM Magnet Program will explore STEM careers, collaborate and innovate in project-based learning courses, and participate in a significant STEM internship prior to graduation.

Students explore and apply for internship opportunities through the AACPS internship portal. The majority of the internships are unpaid.

The STEM internship format is designed to allow students to:

  • Participate in the daily work of professionals in their workplace
  • Engage in collaborative project work alongside mentors and their colleagues
  • Experience the full spectrum of expectations, job skills, and opportunities related to success in the workplace,
  • Evaluate and reflect on the work of a professional through active, daily on-the-job personnel workplace exchanges.

The following is required to earn a satisfactory grade and 1 internship credit

  • A minimum of 135 hours participating in the internship
  • Daily activity logs
  • Completed reflection questions
  • Final project/product
  • Final summary

The AACPS STEM magnet program requires that all STEM students participate in at least one 135 hour STEM internship during their senior year beginning in the summer prior to the start of their senior year.
